Visualisation of pressure distribution on volute walls

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) summer project as part of the Thermofluids Department in the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at University..

Designed and created a 3D model of a double-entry volute for a mixed-flow turbine using MS Excel and Solidworks. Meshed the internal volume of the volute, and ran steady-flow simulations at full admission on Ansys CFX fluid dynamics software, after setting the desired boundary conditions.

Graphs comparing the efficiencies of twin-entry (red) and double-entry (blue) volute for similar mass flow parameters

Compared this data to experimental data, collected by PhD students working under my Professor, of single-entry and twin-entry volutes with the same mass flow parameter at various pressure ratios.
